Gimme (Greed Part 2)

“Son of a bitch,” Mark mumbled. He slammed his apartment door and ripped the tie off his neck. “Nothing. Not one fucking dime.”
He kicked his shoes off and collapsed on the couch. He started to reach for his controller, but closed his eyes and leaned his head on the back of the couch instead. He should have come home with a six-figure check in his hand four months ago. Instead he’d left the lawyer’s office with a big fat nothing.
He hadn’t been the only one. His brother had also left with nothing. As had two of their cousins. His sister however left with money, the proceeds from the life insurance policy, possession of the house and both their grandmother’s vehicles.
When he asked the lawyer why, he was told his sister had been the only one who had ever shown any kind of responsibility and deserved everything she had been given.
The last two months had been hell. His friends had abandoned him two or three weeks after he quit his job. Not that it mattered. If they couldn’t take a joke about them being peons, he didn’t need them anyway.
The lawyer had cut him off from the money his grandmother provided for his rent and utilities so he was forced to use the money he’d been holding onto to keep the lights on. Now that his funds had run out he wasn’t sure how he was going to pay the bill this time.
He sold one of his cars to make the rent last month and lost the rest on a stupid bet between him and his brother. Now the asshole refused to give him a loan to float him through just one more month.
Out of desperation, he’d gone to the bank to try to get a loan to help keep him afloat until he could talk his sister out of some of her money. The loan officer barely looked at his application before denying it outright. So much for paying rent. Again.
He got up and went into kitchen for a drink. If the last two months had taught him anything, it was that alcohol was his friend. It didn’t solve his problems, but it did make him not care so much.
Unfortunately for him, the refrigerator was bare. Food had run out a week before, but he was sure he’d had at least two more beers left. He slammed the door and started rummaging through the cabinets. Nothing there either. He’d been so busy trying to pay the bills, he’d forgotten to stock up. Without a second thought, he pulled his phone out of his back pocket and opened up the grocery app.
Within ten minutes he had a full order of necessities plus a few extras. He completed his order and tossed his phone on the counter. Before he had a chance to pull his dress jacket off, a notification came through.
“Not a valid payment method my ass,” he said, tapping the pay icon again. The same thing happened three more times before he finally gave up. Once again the lawyer struck before he could. “Wonderful.”
Maybe quitting his job the day his grandmother died wasn’t the best idea after all.
He sighed and went to the bathroom to take a hot shower to clear his mind. It wasn’t a cold beer, but it’s what he had. Thirty minutes later he was in PJs, sitting in front of the TV, playing a game.
Right up until the lights went out.
