After the Fall ( Pride Part 2)

February 14
Daddy had his first hearing today. They’re accusing him of stealing millions from his clients. Of course he pleaded not guilty. Daddy wouldn’t do that anyway. Whatever they have on him, he told me, is all made up. He says his firm needed a fall guy and that guy was him. Once the evidence is brought to light everybody else will see it too.
As for me, after I was forced from my house (Daddy assures me I’ll get it back), I’ve been staying with friends. They’re so inhospitable. It’s like they don’t even know who I am. I mean- Hello!! It’s me! I’m worth a hell of a lot more than a night or two on a couch. I’m definitely worth more than your petty Mac and Cheese dinners. Those snotty little brats may like it, but it really is classless.
I can’t wait for this to be over so. Now that I’ve seen who my friends are, I’ll be sure and treat everybody else the same way they treated me.
March 6
Mom’s lost faith. She filed for divorce today. Strange, don’t you think? Daddy should have filed first. Good looking guy like him deserves so much more than her. I’m sure she plans on taking him for half his worth once the charges are dismissed and he’s back at home. If she succeeds she’ll be set for life. Hopefully the judge sees through her and lets Daddy keep it all. She’s an old, bitter hag anyway. He’d rather spend it all on his little princess. I bet he buys me a bigger place to make up for all this. Maybe even a new car.
March 20
I’m alone these days. All my friends have turned on me. They claim Daddy took their parents money and lost it all. Mom asked Granddad to get me a place. It’s okay. Not at all what I’m used to. One bedroom. One bath. Itty bitty closet. Worse, he expects me to cook and clean for myself. He also expects me to get a job. ME! A job!?! I think I’ll just bide my time and let things play out. He said he’d cover my bills until I could get on my feet. His mistake was not giving me a timeline. The car he let me have is my grandmother’s old Cadillac. Imagine me in an old lady car. In a lot of ways it was nicer than my apartment.
April 1
It really is April Fool’s Day. My uncle’s wife called today. She expects me in her office first thing Monday morning to learn how to file. I’m not really sure who she thinks she’s talking to, but I don’t take orders. Certainly not from her. She’s even more of a hag than my mom.
Speaking of Mom. She’s had to go into hiding. People think she knew all along what Daddy’s accused of doing and think she needs to be arrested as well. I say it would do her some good. Call it Karma for turning her back on Daddy when he needed her the most. I haven’t seen her lately but Granddad says she’s lost a lot of weight and he’s worried she may be depressed.
Serves her right, I say.
April 21
Dismal day. Mom knew Daddy’s hearing was today. She knew it! Yet she had to go and overdose on pills. I don’t need this. I need to focus on Daddy. I need to help him so we can get our lives back.
April 22
Mom’s dead. She died late last night. They found a note in her bedroom, blaming Daddy for everything. Now Granddad’s doing the same.
April 23
It’s all over. Thanks to Mom’s selfish stunt, Daddy confessed. The money’s gone. My house is gone. My world is gone…
