Sarah

Sarah Daltry writes about the regular people who populate our lives. She's written works in various genres - romance, erotica, fantasy, horror. Genre isn't as important as telling a story about people and how their lives unfold. Sarah tends to focus on YA/NA characters but she's been known to shake it up. Most of her stories are about relationships - romantic, familial, friendly - because love and empathy are the foundation of life. It doesn't matter if the story is set in contemporary NY, historical Britain, or a fantasy world in the future - human beings are most interesting in the ways they interact with others. This is the principle behind all of Sarah's stories.

Sarah has spent most of her life in school, from her BA and MA in English and writing to teaching both at the high school and college level. She also loves studying art history and really anything because learning is fun.

When Sarah isn't writing, she tends to waste a lot of time checking Facebook for pictures of cats, shooting virtual zombies, and simply staring out the window.
She has written several books, most notably Bitter Fruits, an urban fantasy in the Eden’s Fall series, and the Flowering series, including Forget Me Not, Lily of the Valley, and Star of Bethlehem.

Title: Abiding Ink
Author: Ranae Rose
Series: Inked In The Steel City (#4)
Genre: Contemporary Erotic Romance
Publisher: Self Published
Release Date: Nov 25 2013
Edition/Formats Available In: eBook & Print
Blurb/Synopsis:
Tyler DeHaven may look like a bad boy, but there’s got to be more to the tattoo artist who volunteers at the hospital during the holiday season. Inviting him to a work Christmas party seems innocent enough … at first. Problem is, he’s just as irresistible as he looks and falling fast is more than Mallory bargained for. After all, she’s reminded every day what a gamble love can be, and there’s no question that with him, the stakes are high.
It may be cold outside but Mallory Stephens is the hottest nurse Tyler has ever laid eyes on. To top it off, she also likes ink and wants him to be her holiday party date. He’s not going to say no, and when things get rocky, he’s not going to let their passion frost over, either.
Can a brand-new romance survive the chill as snow falls in the Steel City?

CHAPTER 1 (Excerpt)

“Any new tattoos?” Beneath a helmet of blue-rinsed curls, Ms. Sherwin’s eyes sparkled as she sat up in her hospital bed, leaning toward Tyler.
“No, Ms. Sherwin. Just the same old ink I had yesterday.”
“Tsk tsk. I told you yesterday – call me Ruby! If we’re going to be seeing each other every day, we can at least be friendly.” As he pushed the meal cart forward, she giggled, sounding more eight than eighty or however old she was.
“I’m only volunteering here for a week, Ms. – uh, Ruby.” Six more days, counting today.
She ignored his comment, leaning forward as he approached with her lunch tray. “Ooh!” Gripping him by the wrist, she pushed up the sleeve of his thermal tee, exposing half his forearm. Her tiny, pale hand looked and felt like a child’s in comparison to his. Then again, she was maybe five feet tall, and he was over six.
“Thought I saw something new,” she said, giving his arm a surprisingly strong squeeze. “Silly me. My eyesight’s not what it used to be, you know.”
“Would you like me to hand you your glasses?” He eyed the pair sitting on the tray beside her bed, thick plastic frames with even thicker lenses.
Letting go of his wrist – but leaving his sleeve pushed up – she waved one hand. “I only use those for reading.”
A novel rested on the table, too – a thick paperback with a woman in an old-fashioned dress posing with a ripped, long-haired guy in a kilt on the cover. Tyler slid the meal tray onto the table, careful not to knock the glasses or book off the side.
“Don’t like to wear them when I don’t have to,” she continued. “They make me feel like an owl.”
“I’m sure you don’t look like an owl, Ms. Sherwin.”
“Ruby.” She tittered. “Now what did you bring me for lunch?”
Peering down at the tray, he tried to think of some way to put a good spin on the food he’d just delivered. Unfortunately, the crown jewel of it all was a cup of green gelatin with little chunks of something suspended in its depths. Pear chunks, probably… At least, he hoped so. “Just what the doctor ordered,” was his eventual reply.
A lot of the hospital patients had special dietary restrictions, and apparently Ms. Sherwin was no exception.
“Well, I hope you haven’t been naughty – you know I’ve got to watch my sugar.” She poked the dessert cup, making its contents jiggle, then smiled up at him like they shared some sort of private joke.
“I’m sure it’s sugar-free.”
She raised her thin, white eyebrows like she was about to say something else, but the sound of sneakers against tile filled the room before she could get another word out.
“Ms. Sherwin.” A clear female voice resounded. “How are we today?”
Tyler turned and felt immediately as if he’d been sucker-punched in the gut.
Holy hell. It was her. The nurse he’d noticed yesterday, in the hall. She’d taken his breath away then, walking by and leaving him to practically suffocate over his cart full of red and green Jell-O, pale yellow macaroni and whatever else patients like Ms. Sherwin were allowed to eat. He hadn’t been close enough to read her name badge then, and now, he wanted to, but it was hard to look away from her face.
She raised a brow at him and a polite smile just barely cracked her perfectly-glossed lips. He took in everything – her dark brown eyes and thick lashes, the wet look her gloss gave her mouth and the little sable curls near her temples that had escaped the bun she’d pulled her hair back into. And then his gaze dipped lower.
Okay, it wasn’t that hard to look away from her face. Even in scrubs, her knockout figure was clearly discernible. Above one shapely breast, her badge told him that her name was Mallory.
“Looks like I got here just in time,” Mallory said, sweeping past Tyler and side-stepping his cart. “Let’s check your blood sugar before you eat lunch, Ms. Sherwin.”
“I forgot all about checking my sugar,” Ms. Sherwin said. “If it’s high, blame him.” She pointed a finger toward Tyler, grinning. “He’s so sweet, I think it might’ve rubbed off on me.”
Tyler’s gut clenched as Mallory’s luscious lips curved in a little smirk. “No worries there, Ms. Sherwin. Unless you’ve sweet-talked him into slipping you chocolate, like you did that poor girl last week…”
“He would never. He’s a perfect volunteer. I think you all should keep him around for more than a week.”
“That’s not up to me, Ms. Sherwin.”
Tyler gripped the meal cart by the handle and backed away slowly, wincing as the wheels squeaked. Yeah, being around Mallory was no hardship, but Ms. Sherwin was sabotaging whatever chances he might have with the gorgeous nurse. With any luck he’d run into Mallory again … without a geriatric flirt like Ms. Sherwin around. His heart sped a little at the thought, and he cast a last, long look at Mallory’s back as he retreated.
Talk about hot. Her lavender scrub pants didn’t mask the perfect curve of her ass, and the color flattered her smooth, light brown skin. It was flawless and uninked – not that she needed tattoos, or anything else, to look amazing.
“Thanks for bringing by Ms. Sherwin’s lunch,” Mallory called over her shoulder.
Her words caught him off guard, and he guiltily transferred his gaze to something else – the window, where snow flurries were falling beyond the half-open blinds. “No problem.”
The meal cart rattled as he steered it right into the doorframe.
Damn it.
Mallory and Ms. Sherwin both turned to stare at him.
“Need some help?” Mallory asked, arching one finely-shaped brow again and looking like she might head his way.
“No, no.” He raised one hand. “I got it.” God. He had to look like such a douche.
“Told you he was sweet,” Ms. Sherwin said, giggling.
Tyler hurried the hell out of the room, managing not to run into anything else. He made it several steps before realizing that his left sleeve was still pushed halfway up his arm. Jerking it down, he covered himself up. In long sleeves, only the very edges of his full tattoo sleeves were visible, just barely peeking over the edge of his wrist. Ms. Sherwin had spied them the instant he’d walked into her room the day before – she was bullshiting him about her failing eyesight, for sure.
Not everyone was such a fan of tattoos, and so, he kept them covered while volunteering at the hospital. It was December anyway, and as the snow falling outside attested, it was more than cold enough to justify his clothing choices.
Not that he gave a shit, in general, what people thought of his tattoos. He just didn’t want to make any waves while he was helping out at the hospital. He was here for his sister, and all he really cared about was keeping her safe. Maybe it made him a jerk, but he never would’ve volunteered otherwise. And yet…
He couldn’t help but wonder what Mallory thought of his ink – what little bit she’d been able to see thanks to Ms. Sherwin, that was. He wouldn’t have minded if she’d shoved up his sleeve and decided to see for herself, that was for sure. As he wheeled the meal cart into another room, a vivid fantasy sprang up in his mind, starting there and quickly taking a much less innocent turn.

The saying about dying for your child is the absolute truth. The other things you would do are comparable to that of death. I know, I did those things. I did unthinkable things, all for Maddie. I continued the lie, the secrets with the one man who had no right, whom I despised and wanted dead.

I had no choice. I did it all for her... for my Maddie.

Excerpt:

I didn’t even notice him. Dana sat him in my section with his back turned. Him and his girlfriend or whatever she was, sat side by side and another couple sat across from them. I stupidly walked right up to the table with my green notepad.
“Can I start you with some drinks?” I asked as my eyes landed right on Alex’s. Shit.
“Do you have a wine list?” his female friend asked.
I wanted to laugh at her. This was a camp ground not a five star restaurant. “We have a house wine,” I offered, pointing to the Moscato red wine. “We have beer,” I said, catching Maddie, scooting a chair to the fish aquarium. I turned to see my dad talking to some guests with his back to her. I looked to see Dana laughing and talking with some other guests as she rang them out. Somebody needed to pay attention to Maddie.
“Excuse me,” I said, walking away as I watched her foot slip from the chair and hit the floor, followed by a loud shrill.
“Why can’t you listen for once?” I asked, picking her up. She clung to me and wailed. “You’re not hurt. It just scared you,” I said, rubbing circles around her back.
“Here, come to Papaw,” my dad said, trying to take her. She wailed again.
“NO! I want my mommy!” she cried out as I carried her toward the kitchen away from the spectators and Alex’s scrutinizing eyes that I was sure was on me.
“That thing has got to go,” I said, turning to my dad. I was so sick of that stupid fish aquarium it wasn’t even funny. “Are you hungry? I asked, trying to calm Maddie. “Do you want Jaron to make you a hot dog?”
“I want ice cream,” she decided, wiping tears down her face with her little fingers.
“No. No ice cream. How about a grilled cheese?”
“I want ice cream,” she howled.
“Take her,” I told my dad. I really did hope she wanted to go home with him. I needed to get turned up with some friends my own age.
I was never so happy to see Dianna in all my life. She was taking Alex and his party’s orders. I was getting the hell out of there. I walked over to take some empty plates from my last table and offer dessert.
“How was everything,” I asked as they moved their arms for me to take their plates.
“Great,” they all replied with the two men rubbing their full bellies.
“How about dessert? We have an awesome peanut butter pie tonight,” I offered.
“Yes,” the men stated, deciding they weren’t as full as they had initially thought. The two women declined.
“Would you like coffee?” I asked.
I walked toward the kitchen with a full arm, not missing the stare from Alex or my daughter sitting at the counter with a bowl of ice cream. I shook my head at my father. He shrugged as I continued to the kitchen.
“Can you get table 4 coffee?” I asked Dana as I placed the delicious looking pies on a tray.
“Sure. I think, we’re kidnapping Maddie for the night. She got two new movies for her birthday. Papaw promised we would watch them and make popcorn.”
“You can have her,” I teased, hoping she didn’t want to come home with me.
I stood at the end of the counter while Maddie ate her ice cream, smothered in gummy bears.
“I thought I told you no ice cream,” I said, looking up to see Alex’s eyes boring into me. What the hell? Maddie needed to hurry so we could get the hell out of there.
“Papaw teld me yes,” she assured me as she popped a red gummy bear into her mouth. “Dem is hard,” she giggled.
I smiled at her. She was so silly sometimes. “That’s because you froze them.”
“Dem will get warm in my belly,” she assured me. “You have one,” she offered. I opened my mouth and took the candy from her fingers.
“Yuck, Maddie. That’s gross. That’s like eating a flavored ice cube.”
“That not a ice cube,” she assured me.
“Are you coming home with mommy?”
“No. I watch a movie wif Papaw and Gammy. I eat popcorn.”
“You need to eat some supper.”
“My belly full.”
“Yeah, full of ice cream and candy. Are you done?”
Maddie nodded and slid off the stool. I swear that kid was fearless. It’s a good thing I was standing right there to catch her. I was sure she would have been screaming again.

I hate author bio’s, so I’m just not gonna do it. I’m a rebel. I chose to ask my readers what they would like to know about me and this is what they came up with.

Vikki Ryan—I love that your books have a dark edge to them, what made you choose to write in that genre rather than romance.
I have tried to keep it PG, Vikki. I really have. My mind doesn’t seem to be able to keep it that way and quickly turns into rated for DG. (Dirty Girls Only.)

Monica Robinson—Oooohhh...What's your favorite naughty movie?
Well Mrs. Monica, the only one that comes to mind would be Original Sin with Angelina Jolie.

Danielle Chako—1) what was the first thing you ever wrote? Any age. Could be a short story, monologue, article...etc.
2) Do you get inspiration from other authors and if so who?
The first thing that I ever wrote was for a Christmas contest in the third grade. I won a very proud blue ribbon for that gay little story. I try not to read a lot when I am in writing mode. It turns out to be a disaster because I will change my whole writing style to whatever I am reading and end up rewriting A LOT. I do love to read, and I have many inspirations. CJ Roberts is one of my all-time favorites. I guess I like to read a little on the dark side as well.

Tiffany Abel—who is your favorite book villain and why? Does this character affect how you write a villain?
Oh, I’m a bad girl, but I have to say Caleb from Captive in the dark series. I hated and loved him at the same time.

Danielle Chilcott—what was going through your Mind when you were writing All for Maddie?
Maddie is quite the little character. Some of the things she said and did came from my own three kids, growing up. It made me reflect back to the toddler years and feel just a hint of nostalgia. I wouldn’t want to do it again, but they are so honest at that age.

Katie Cramer—Jettie ...hmmm. What makes u write the way you do? Personal experience? Desire? Dreams? What’s your inspiration?
You’re my inspiration Katie Cramer because you love my books. You ask why I write the way I do, I assume you mean the edge of my writing. I’m a dirty girl. That’s what I like to read and write. Personal experience? Hmmm. I did say I would answer truthfully, didn’t I? A lot of what I have written, like the things that Drew did in Underestimated was from fantasy and I am sure a lot of what I write comes from experience. You don’t stay married for 24 years by doing it missionary style. J

AMY NEASE—your books seem to always have a toy or two of ten. How many toys do you own with batteries?
Oh. Geesh. Good lord. A few.

Kayla Weiner—What do you have to have to write? (music, food, drink, etc...). What is always on your desk?
Coffee. Definitely a cup of coffee. A far as music, I am sort of living my second childhood. No. Wait. I haven’t grown up yet. Anything Pink, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, some rap, Adam Lavine, and anything with a nice beat.

Kaleigh Knight Jordan— if you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor? And Why?
Hmmmm, that’s tough. I’m going to say CJ Roberts again because I would LOVE to get in her head, just to see if it’s as crazy as mine.

Crystal Barr—Where is your favorite place to write, and do you have a certain time that you prefer to write?
I have a beautiful desk that my husband bought for me overlooking an amazing view and I sit at my kitchen table, usually. I have an adjustable bed, so I write in bed a lot too with my hospital looking table and I write a lot at work as well. I tend to be most inspired early in the morning for whatever reason.

Candy Simpson—Who inspires you to write? What keeps you writing?
Hmmmm. I have many inspirers. My mom, my sister, Author M. Robinson, Crystal at A writers helping hand, Natalie, Alicia, Amy E, Megan, Julie Kerr, everyone who loves my writing and help me in any way they can, I guess. I keep writing because I love to write, I eat, sleep and breathe writing. I’m sure I would do it if everyone hated what I wrote.

Jessi Venture—You said you would answer anything sooooo. When you are writing you very steamy sex scenes, do you tend to get a little aroused yourself? I do reading them. I was just wondering if it has the same effect when you write about.
You’re a dirty girl. Definitely. That is probably a good thing for my readers. How do I explain this? It’s easier to talk about my characters. Put it this way. The friskier I feel, the kinkier the scene will be for you. J

With her father’s death leaving her orphaned, Elena is whisked away to her true birthplace, Paegeia.
Arriving at Dragonia Academy, the premier school for young Dragonians, she begins to feel a sense of belonging in this strange world; a school she was never meant to attend because her father was a dragon. Elena is soon swept up in the rigor of her new life and the new set of skills she now needs to survive: Latin, Art of War, and Enchantments.
Entranced by her new reality Elena learns about the dragons and humans who inhabit her new home. There are two classes of dragons that soar through Paegeia distinguished by their instinctual pretense for either good or darkness. The distinction between these two very different species is vital to Elena’s success in her new world because she has been marked as a Dragonian, a human preordained to ride and tame a dragon of her very own.
With the help of her new friends, Elena is able to navigate the complexities of her new home. Her new roommates Becky and Sammy are even more amazing then she could have ever imaged and to top it all off, Sammy was a dragon. Sammy’s is also the devoted sister of Blake, the most attractive boy at school and the Rubicon; the only dragon of his kind with the abilities of all the dragon species with a pretense for evil. Elena soon finds the love she always wanted with Lucian, the Prince of Tith, who actively pursues Elena throughout her time at Dragonia Academy, winning her heart with his absolute adoration and unshaken dedication.
Unbeknownst to Elena danger is lurking behind the enchanted vines concealing the once thriving capital of Paegeia – Etan. Goran, the darkest sorcerer to ever practice his evil arts in the realm, has lain dormant for over a century behind the crumbling city. The first step in his menacing plan is to destroy the only weapon that can kill him – the King of Lion Sword.
When the sword is stolen Elena doesn’t think twice about seeking it; knowing deep down that it is her destiny to save her new home. Excerpt
She smiled and held his hand a little tighter where their hands joined, energy swirled. He couldn’t see it but he could feel the presence of something special in her. Maybe she really was his bruid. A flicker of hope sprung. That could explain why she made him feel so strange…so good.
“My mother’s not around. My father’s always traveling so I go with him. He’s really good at finding people.”
“My father is Argonzo Blackmoore, president of the were and vampire council.”
Her fingers flexed at the name. Everyone knew the name of his father. He was one of the most powerful people in the world. “That’s if you’re really that awful Grayson.”
“Awful?” Surprise got the better of him.
A playful look crossed her face. “I hear Grayson is a stalwart hero who’s as impenetrable as rock in a fight.”
That almost made him laugh. “No one says anything so poetic about me.”
“True. I believe what they really said was that you were a quiet vampire with a temper.” She threw her head back and laughed, revealing the smooth length of her neck, and the thumping pulse beating beneath the skin. Gray had to force his gaze away from her vein.
Too late!
He saw the throbbing vein. The muscles in his neck locked tight in a painful knot as he straightened his spine. His fangs distended. Only weak, or young, vampires couldn’t control their compulsion to feed at the sight of a vein. Panic grabbed at him. How shameful to reveal his fangs to her, to show weakness to this woman. No! Grayson’s heart beat frantically, sweat slicked the back of his neck, he wouldn’t do it. Even if he had to kiss her to keep her from seeing those vile teeth. Wait. His mind slowed. Kiss her? Grayson froze, his wayward thought garnering far too much consideration.
“Are you feeling well?” Concern pulled the girl’s eyebrows into a furrow that still made her look impossibly sweet.
His eyes locked on her mouth. All he could manage in answer was a brisk shake of his head—no.
“Is there anything I can do?” she asked.
Again, he shook his head. How was it he knew he needed to open his mouth and speak to her, yet he couldn’t think of a single thing to say?
He was nearly hugging her. They’d long stopped dancing. They merely stood there touching each other. Suddenly words he hadn’t known he wanted to say burst from him. “Please tell me if you are her!” He shook her with the question. “I must know.”
The smile on her face faded. Sadness transformed her face into something beautifully bad. The look made his own heart break into pieces at the sight. “Are you truly Grayson Blackmoore or are you funning me, my lord?”
Just then the sound of rocks being removed began. They’d been found. People on the other side of the rubble started clearing it out. The crashing of stone made it difficult to answer her without yelling. Grayson grabbed the girl’s hand and pulled her further back into the room as dust and small rocks trickled down from the pile.
When he had her attention he told her, “I am.”
She blinked as if she’d forgotten what he was talking about. Then she remembered.
Grayson must admit he wasn’t prepared for the impact her stricken face had on him. He nearly took back his words—however stupid that’d be. He nearly denied truly being Grayson, he’d do anything, to remove that expression from her face. Anything.
The rocks were being pulled away faster. They didn’t have much time. Grayson felt like he
held a delicate kite in his hands on a thin string and the wind was whipping by trying to tear the kite from him.
Leaning close he asked, “Are you her?”
Her lips parted before she fixed her expression into an unreadable mask. He hated the look; she was hiding something. That secret look made his stomach plummet. But her next move caught him completely by surprise. The beautiful blonde were, not the dark-haired vampire who he’d be mating with tonight, stepped up on the tips of her toes and pressed her lips to his.
It was Grayson Blackmoore’s first real kiss.
Grayson jerked in surprise, but didn’t sever their tentative connection. Their breaths stirred, mingled. Eyes stayed locked in a warm embrace. Gently, he pressed his lips more firmly against hers. Their lips touched completely now. He yearned to close his eyes and kiss her properly how he’d really like to, but he could hear voices now. The wall was nearly torn down.
Grayson stepped back from temptation, feeling as dazed as the girl looked. The stones were removed moments later and a flood of faces swept into the small room. His father was before him, angry. Not that anyone but close family could see that the president of the were and vampire community was anything more than mildly annoyed. No, Grayson had been around his father long enough to recognize the stiff upper lip and quickened steps.
He was dragged to a room the size of an area. It was packed full of unfamiliar faces, both were and vampire. The room smelled of expensive cologne, blood that filled glasses, and sweetness from poppy flowers used to decorate the occasion.
“We do not have time to idle, son. The Redenver father has it in his head this is a poor sign of tidings to come. Hurry, we must begin the ceremony before he reneges on his deal.” Argonzo Blackmoore was a tall, slender figure with the nose of a hawk, and the complexion of an Italian.
“Now?”
His father cast him a spared glance, watchful. “Yes, now. Are you ready?”
It was time. He would meet and mate with his one and only now. How strange that a cool stillness crept over him, bracing him, in that moment. Those unfamiliar faces turned to watch him and his father as they made their way to the center of the room to the dais on which stood the awaiting Blackmoore and Redenver family.
It wasn’t her.
Tongue dry as parchment, Grayson licked his lips. It couldn’t be her. The possibility of it was next to nothing. Yet, as his father released him and Grayson marched up the dais to meet his bruid, he yearned for that familiar face to stare up at him from beneath the veil. One that could dazzle him with a smile.
His father announced the families to the quieting crowd. Grayson stood tall next to a girl wearing a loose white gown with a veil obscuring her face from view. Grayson would soon pull that veil up to reveal her. And so it began.
He and the quiet girl who had yet to speak a word were positioned to face one another. Grayson swore everyone could see the sweat dripping down his temples. He was sure of it. Everyone knew he didn’t want to be here right now. They had to see it in the strain on his face. His hands managed not to tremble as he took his bruid’s slender hands in his own. For a second he found himself trying to learn if this girl’s hands were the same as the girl he’d danced with. The girl had been wearing gloves so he didn’t have any clue how her hands looked. Were they slender fingered with long nails like the girl next to him had?
The moment came crashing over Grayson with staggering finality. A priest spoke vows before them, his words sounding as if they came from far away. On a final word, the bruid before him slowly pulled back the veil.
It felt like someone was skinning him alive, such was the agony of waiting to see.
Was it her?
He didn’t think he’d ever wanted anything so badly in his life as he wanted this. The first strands of hair came into view. The very world rolled before him making the room spin in a whirlwind of motion. Grayson rocked on the heel of his boots nearly losing his balance before he caught himself. Did anyone see him losing control right now? Did anyone even care that his world was completely upside down?
Across the room stood a girl. In front of him, a lovely girl with eyes the color of coal and hair dark as night looked up at him with calm acceptance. Across the room, his eyes stayed locked on a girl with the wildest blonde hair he’d ever seen. She stared at him with an expression
Grayson knew he’d never be able to forget. For her look showed exactly how he felt right now—ravaged. Like he’d found something precious and perfect for a few minutes but now had to put the gift down and walk away from it. She shook her head as if to clear her head from what she was seeing. His body nearly surged towards her, wanting, no, needing to go to her and comfort her.
Then Anita of Redenver spoke, and in a strong voice vowed to stay beside Grayson for eternity.
It was his turn. His role had already been cast. His mother, his family, were more important than him.

Grayson Blackmoore delivered his vows as succinctly as Anita had. Applause broke out as Argonzo presented Grayson and Anita to the crowd. Shiny teeth flashed in forced, over-bright smiles from the faces below. But across the room, the face he sought to look upon one final time was gone. And he realized, it would never be there again.
